Those of us who lament that the last vestiges of summer are slipping away can nonetheless take comfort in the knowledge that the new AIA ARCHAEOLOGY BOOK CLUB season is upon us!
What better way to shake off the lethargy of summer than by confronting the concept that eating one’s own species may be as natural, even advantageous, as seeking the shade on a hot summer’s day!
On Thursday, September 19, at 1:30 pm, in the Greenburgh Public Library, vertebrate paleontologist Bill Schutt will have us consider this and other fascinating human and four-legged animal behaviors as biological imperatives.
In our review of his fascinating, delicious book Cannibalism: a perfectly natural history, we will discover times when cannibalism was accepted as the ultimate expression of filial piety, and others when it was appreciated as an evolutionary advantage. When did man relegate it to the realm of psychopaths? Is it time to bring these controversial practices out of the dark closet of abhorrence and into the light of understanding?
Please note that we will be meeting this one time in the second floor Local History Room.
